Earlier today, I went online to renew my EHIC card as it expires this year. I typed “EHIC UK” into Google and clicked on the first link that looked right.
However, looking at the website it became clear that to renew my EHIC would cost me about £20. Since I was always under the impression that applying for and renewing an existing EHIC was free of charge I smelt a rat. It turns out I was on one of several scam EHIC websites that seek to defraud people by charging for EHICs.
Don't get caught out as many thousands of people apparently already have been according to an article in the Guardian last year.
The only official website is this one...

They do a search for "Take That Concert tickets" for example, choose the first web site that looks "right" on the list and buy tickets from there.
It turns out it is a fake web site and the tickets never turn up.
I have to say it is a bit of a minefield and finding the "right" site to buy anything is a risky business nowadays.
And this is always the risk.

Google displayed 3 "hits" at the top of the page with a light orange background. These are often sponsored sites, and for many people the most likely for them to go to first.
Each of these 3 web sites charge money to get your EHIC card.
Only the 4th one on the list was the genuine "free" NSH web site.
The other danger with these rogue sites that charge is that you are filling in all your personal information on a web site which could be run by criminals or other dodgy people.
By putting in all your personal information (including NI number) you are giving away personal information that could be useful for criminals or others who could sell it off.

That was the thing that stuck me about these websites. Money aspect aside, the really worrying thing is that you're giving them all your personal details including your NI number. Not only that, you're providing them with the names, DOBs, NI numbers of your spouse and all your kids! What the criminal fraternity could do with this information makes the mind boggle.
