Yes.
No. But if you're flying the airlines want photographic identification so your passport would be handy.
Always have to show mine Sandy. Unless it`s just me. Mine is an Irish Passport, but others with me with British passport show theirs.
Gness, Your advice to the OP is better than mine. I only ever go to Dublin by train
Come home gness, the craic is better here
Could be wrong Sandy. It may be that I am on some "Watch this one" list.
you're not a craic smuggler, are you? :-)
Oh do I miss it,Sibton. And all the red hair. The Guinness. The music. The craic. No rushing.......Ooooo.
She who must be watched, she's scary sandy
Well that collection of answers must have confused the questioner!

The simple answer is that British citizens do NOT require a passport to visit the Republic of Ireland. (There's an open land border between the two countries after all).

However the security requirements of airlines and ferry companies (which are completely separate to the immigration rules of Ireland and the UK) vary. Ryanair, for example, will ONLY accept a valid passport as proof of identity, whereas Aer Lingus accepts a wide range of ID documents:

Sorry B. :-( What happens when you ask a question and 3 Irish people answer.
I consider myself reprimanded. :-)

Any other questions davida do ask though.
Meet you there Sibton.
I think the authorities would accept a driving licence with a photo, but I always take my passport just in case.
That's interesting, gness, whenever I've been it's been by ferry and they've never bothered.
