Round the world travel

My son wants to take a 4 month break from work and travel from London via China, S E Asia, Australasia, LA, NY, London in 2013. Has any ABer done this and if so through whom did you organise your travel etc.

I would go the other way round; travel to the U.S. first to save on jet lag. I did a round the world trip 14 years ago and used the co-op (this was before I had a computer). Everything went to plan but not sure if they're still operating.

The co-op is still around coccinelle, There is a co-op travel in my local town.
