New York 4th July - What to do

Where of the best place to go July 4th whilst in New York? Is everything open as normal? I've read various things about the Macy's fireworks display which starts around 9pm. Do you know where would be best to view? Like a rooftop bar or is it better to be in the thick of it? Is there anything we must see during the day besides hotdog competitions etc... We are really looking forward to it and would like to enjoy it best we can. What I'd the local American norm? Thanks guys

I have been in the States when it`s 4th July but I can`t remember. What I do know is you get some spectacular sales in the shops then. I`m pretty sure the shops are open on 4th. They say you can see the fireworks from the Hudson. As it happens, I`m in NY at the beginning of June. I`ll make a note in my diary to ask our concierge for any tips.

Thanks a lot 237SJ. We are really looking forward to it all. Got a while to wait though yet.
You should check out the Circle Line Tour. That`s a very nice thing to do in NY in the summer. I can`t remember where you meet the boat but it is down in the Amsterdam area of Manhattan. If you take advantage of the sales in NY, I believe you can claim your tax back (8%) at the airport. I think you have to spend $200 to be eligible.
