Hylands House is quite nice. If it is fine there a good walking park and the tea shop is well stocked with lunches/cakes etc. You can visit the house but there is not too much to do there.
Also museum at Oaklands Park in Chelmsford. |

If it's a nice day, go along to Southend - if you want to visit stately homes, Audley End, or other stately homes (you'd need to check winter opening hours) - Lakeside?

Difficult to know what sort of things you like. But iff you're the outdoor hardy type, Rainham Marshes are interesting and a good place for a lovely walk. (Just west of the Dartford Tunnel)
There's an open day at Hainault Forest on 15th. There's an Ice Show at Brentwood and theatres at Hornchurch and Southend. You could always take them on the train ride along the pier at Southend and have lunch with a show in the evening. What about Constable Country? Are tyou far from Flatford Mill etc There's history in Colchester and a host of historic houses in Essex. Some will be closed at this time of year but have a look here for ideas. http://www.essextouri...oService=194&CityID=0 |

I know the area well. (My mother's family were from that area). But I'm still struggling for something to do on a Sunday in January!
Tilbury Fort is quite interesting. (Open 10 to 4) http://www.english-he...perties/tilbury-fort/ Lakeside Shopping Centre is open from 11 to 5: http://www.lakeside.uk.com/ The Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker is open from 10 to 4: http://www.lakeside.uk.com/ Southend's Cliffs Pavilion has panto in the afternoon and the Syd Lawrence Orchestra in the evening: https://southendtheat...00F-8450-DDCA0470C046 If it was me, I'd probably simply opt for taking a train to Southend and exploring the pubs. (I can highly recommend the Cornucopia on the seafront!). A return ticket from Billericay costs £7.50 but 4 people travel for the price of 2, so you'd only pay £15 in total. Chris |
