It depends what time you travel, but it says here, cheapest fare £31.20 return http://ojp.nationalra...0/dep/171211/1230/dep

which sites were you looking at?
I got the same price as Boxtops from National Rail enquiries
Have a look on www.redspottedhanky.com
the prices seem to be coming up cheaper than that you have been quoted, various prices at various times.
If you book now you might be able to get a cheaper ticket than if you buy on the day, but I think some of those deals are a minimum of a month in advance.
Brum - Oxford - £10 or £12 single tickets on almost every train. Same coming back

Not sure what you were looking at - there isn't a £36 fare.

Unless there are 3 of you - that would be £36 total??
Newark to Kings Cross on 19 January, £12.50 single for 2 people!

I was using the trainline website - will try others as you all suggest - was only doing quote for one adult - very odd Thanks!
<<but I think some of those deals are a minimum of a month in advance>.

Nope - the day before, as long as they haven't sold out. They don't always

Still available on Monday, for example, though on fewer trains
Just looked at the Trainline myself and it's showing £12 each way. But the times you put in will make a difference.
From £12 each way on Megatrain http://www.eastmidlan.../Pages/megatrain.aspx
