don't think so, at Kings cross you get tickets at the advanced travel counter, if it's following day or after. Not even sure you get tickets on the platform but the ticket office, or the self service machines which are in the ticket office, does that make sense?

Thanks - I'm talking about local stations where there's never anyone in the ticket office and a huge queue at the machine!!
If you buy the tickets through The Trainline or directly from the train company's website you can collect them at any time from some the machines in some stations.
Not from a machine, no. You can buy at the ticket office or (if you have booked in advance online) pick up from designated ticket machines

Well I went down to the local station and you CAN but a ticket for the next day .......but, and I quote from the touch-screen, "only after 4pm on a Sunday until Thursday"....so, no good for me then!
What about using an Oyster Card?

Only use the trains/buses once in a blue moon....(that's why I don't know much about them!!)
