A friend and I are hoping to go on holiday for a week from the 27th May. We would like to go to Formentara or Mallorca. Ideally we would like to rent an apartment but as we would like to keep costs down we are happy to stay in hostels/cheap hotels. Does anybody have any advice about accommodation in either of these two islands? What about island hopping around all the islands- would it be a possiblity at this time of year without making reservations in advance?

Hi I live in Ibiza.  I would not risk not booking accommodation in Formentera as it will be into the season then.  Island hopping will be quite difficult.  Obviously Formentera to Ibiza will be possible as there are regular ferries which take an hour each way, but from any of the other islands to each other you are looking at 4hrs each way - flights being very expensive and usually booked up in advance. Of course you may be lucky in getting cheraper flights.  By the way, there is no fresh water on Formentera - hotels supply a jug of fresh water to clean your teeth with.  That's why very few private houses have swimming pools.  Good Luck
