Cheap ferry crossings- England to France. Any Tips?

We are planning to travel to France in July 2008 in a car with caravan. What are other peoples opinions on how to cross, and how to search for cheap ferry crossings?
Not sure yet on route but searches so far show plymouth-santander around £1,000.
Any ideas?

You are not going to get that route much if any cheaper.

Portsmouth Bilbao will be (a bit, not much) cheaper and it's worth looking out for offers - probably in the new year.

But - both of those places are in Spain, not France. Where are you actually headed for?

Channel crossings will be a lot cheaper - but with a longer drive, depending on where you are going.

Try these although they have no July prices available as yet
They are the cheapest ferry company I have found

Unlikely to be much cheaper though

Like dzug says though, Santander is in Spain, not France

Book with one of the largest cross Channel ferries operators in the U.K at the most competitive prices. Onboard save even more with savings of up to 50% off high street prices on perfume, tobacco, wine, beer and spirits. You'll find designer names and excellent deals. Great food is also available at a wide choice of eateries.
