Any info on how to restore Dell Inspiron 1525 to factory settings would be welcome. My daughter has a load of rubbish installed and i think a virus is stuck in one of them. Anyway your suggestions on how to go back to year zero would be appreciated.

Press F8 while the BIOS screen is showing after you turn it on.
This will of course remove any programs that have been installed, all data, and any Windows Updates that have been downloaded.
The documentation that came with it should tell you.

If not the Dell web site (Support section) will help you. You can probably download the documentation from there.
