Android Tablet PC problem with accessing android market......

Help.......can anyone explain in plain english what I have to do to register my android tablet PC so that I can use it to access the Android market (this is already on the tablet).

I've set up a google account but still get various error messages about the internet connection having failed (even though I can access other web pages OK) and also that there is no device registered to this account.....

Can anyone point me to a step by step guide to what I need to do?
