picture quality question

I was watching the crazies on sky movies on my new tv tonight, and noticed that in the segments where the picture goes dark, you can see imperfections in the picture really bad. (like pixalating, or smokey looking, even though it was a HD film)
I have a sky hd box, with a hdmi cable set up, the tv I have is a Panasonic brand plasma. Is this a common complaint, or can this be resolved with cabeling improvements or other improvements.
My cabling is done via a Mid Range Monster.

Well certainly not by any improvements in the HDMI cable, you were ripped off by buying the one you've got, a less than £5 HDMI cable from the Internet or Tescos would give you exactly the same results as the stupidly expensive monster cable. It's a digital signal so it's either there or it isn't, you don't get clearer 1s and 0s buy buying a more expensive cable. The whole "you need to buy an expensive cable to getter better results" was a halfway myth in the analogue days and it's a total myth with digital.
The first thing to do is go into the settings for the sky box and switch the picture output from 1080 to automatic. Even though it was a HD movie it only would have been 720p so the sky box would be upscaling it to 1080p and the sky HD box ubscaler is famously crap! if you switch the box to automatic and let the TV take care of the upscaling you should see better results.
