What will she be using it for? Surfing the net? Playing games? Writing letters?
Sony Vaio
Sony's are hugely overpriced (you're paying for the name) and not that good quality.

Stick to the well known brands, HP, Dell, Toshiba and you'll not go far wrong. make sure it's got at least 2GB of ram and any modern laptop will be plenty good enough for a new computer user.
Chuck, replaced my Dell with a Sony 6 months ago and couldn't be more pleased with my choice.

she is only a learner and only will be using to surf the net so I think a wee basic one will do altho having 2GB Ram is a good idea in any laptop. Thanks everybody
Well pleased with my Acer Aspire
Buy an Acer Aspire, you get more features for your buck.
We've got an Acer at home, pleased with it for what we need it for. My work one is a Dell.
