Which should I buy my 7year old son? He keeps rabbiting on about both. What are the differences? He already has a ds lite so the dsi has the advantage as we already have games but ignoring that, what would people go for?

PSP for me, however for a seven year old probably a DSi.
My boys have both the Ds lite and DSi and tbh I don't really think that there is enough of a difference to justify having them both. There is also this new DSi 3d or something my boys are talking about.

I have no exerience of a PS3, so can't comment, but as you say, you are starting from scratch with the games.

I think I'd go for the PS3 and let him trade in his Dsl for a Dsi with any christmas money.

Will I be able to play UK psp games in a psp from America? Or UK ds games in a dsi from America? His ds lite came from the US and his UK games work but I know the manufacturres update these things to avoid us saving money!
No idea i'm afraid potty. The dss don't seemt o be too bad for that, I ordered my boys original ds lites from hong kong - didn't save an money, it was just that they had asked Santa for colours not available in uk yet!! They worked fine with UK games and games that we got in the states and some that they bought in France. By the time they got the DSi last Christmas, they had traded or sold most of their earlier games - can't recall them saying they had any problems with any the games they have, but I'm not sure anymore what was bought where. You can't use game boy advance games in the dsi - there is no slot for those.

They played with the extra features on the DSi on Christmas day, and very rarely since. I only got them because Sainsburys had them on a great deal last year and I had loads of points so effectively got one free!

And now I've just seen somthing called a dsi xl. What's that about? Do I assume its bigger? And someone has just told me that the psp has the benefit of going on tne internet, but I thought you could do that on a dsi too? All too complicated at this time of night so I shall go to bed and hopefully log on in the morning to lots of really helpful answers!

Anyone up yet this morning?!
what are they?

Handheld games consoles. But that's where my knowledge ends and the websites just confuse me.
Ah, thank you. Not my province at all!
The xl is just the same as a DSi but with a bigger screen - aimed at the older adult market - done is subtle colours for grown ups.
hi there

The ds lite, is basically a slimline version of the original nintendo ds console. It can play the old gameboy advance games, plus the nintendo DS games.

the dsi is a newer member of the ds family, see this link for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DSi

other than a few new features, I personally don't see the point in it, with the dsi, it loses the gba slot. The dsi xl is a larger version of the console, aimed at older gamers.

One that I would possibly go for later on is the Nintendo 3DS, it is supposed to have loads of upgrades, and a fantastic launch line up:

Would imagine the 3DS will be out of our price range in this instance, and that is assuming it is launched before Xmas. We don't need a Gameboy slot either. So it is just between getting a dsi or a psp.
ANNIE - the 3ds you mentioned about is released in March, I can't wait to get my hands on it as Nintendo were going for November release but decided not to. (maybe supply and demand figures)

POTTY - ds lite and dsi , the difference is the dsi has a camera. dsixl has a bigger screen (this are the differences between the 2).
psp has better gameplay and graphics and is a much better console as my kids have both. psp can browse the net and certain games allow you to play online against other people, but the psp is far superior.
personally i love the DSI, its fun and your 7 years old will love the touch screen.
A little one 'rabbiting' ? :-)

society - Where I come from it means talking too much!!
wilkesneil - I thought you could browse the internet on the dsi too???
potty, not sure how good the web connection is on the dsi but the psp has a fairly decent connection speed. the web is very similar to that of the ps3 if you've seen that. very easy to use has the psp automatically signs you in when you switch on, not sure if the dsi does.
I've never managed to get my two's DSis to connect to the web - not sure what the problem is. We have wireless in the house and their netbook and wii are both connected, but for some reason the DSis just dont connect - can't even remember what the error is.
