Greetings each.
I have acquired a friend's knackered laptop 'cos he said the power switch was faulty and the thing would need a new motherboard.
After testing it the switch seems OK, but my local computer tech tells me it is unlikely to be the switch and that it IS more likely to need a new motherboard, which cannot now be obtained. He suggested flogging it on Ebay for spares.
The problem is though, that my friend had a lot of personal/banking details on the HDD so this would need to be wiped before selling the thing.
How can I access the data on it with an ordinary PC please?
Is there anything I can connect it to as I don't have another laptop of my own.
Be good!
Cheers.

If it's just being sold for spares/scrap then sell it without the hard drive in it, as far as I can make out it will only be a 40GB which is next to worthless anyhow.

If you want to make sure that the data on the hard drive is safe then a large screwdriver hammered through the centre of it will do that job effectively
take out the HDD, there should be a small hatch that you unscrew underneath the laptop, HDD will be in there, unscrew the runners on the side which hold it in place and it should just slide out. give the HDD back to your friend as he can safely say his details aren't going anywhere and if they do go anywhere and someone does get hold of his details you can't be blamed..
You can get a USB adaptor to connect a Hard Drive to another computer (You would need to remove the Hard Drive from the laptop).

However looking on ebay they are selling for about £100 working. I would probably just remove the hard drive and sell it without it. I don't think it will make a huge amount of difference for what you will get. Or sell it in bits (Screen, Keyboard etc). Good luck anyway.
