Can anyone tell me how to transfer data from a "read only" file saved on a disc? It was saved on a Microsoft Office trial which has since finished. I installed another tria but still can't get the data on to my computer. Unfortunately, I can't afford to install the full Microsoft Office programme. I am a surfing granny, so if you can help....please keep it simple. Cheers.

Don't really understand the question. What kind of file? What kind of disk? The fact that a file is Read-Only doesn't prevent you from copying it. If it's on a hard disk, floppy disk or memory stick you can make it Read/Write as follows:
Right-click the file
Choose Properties
Uncheck the Read-Only box

If the medium is Read-Only (such as a CDROM) then you can't change the file to Read/Write until you copy it to another medium.

I also don't see how you can install a second trial of MS Office. Once the trial has expired, installing another trial won't work.
If you need to read and write Office files and can't afford MS Office, you can download and install OpenOffice, which is totally free, and can be configured to read/write in MS Office format.
