when i take the phone away from my ear, after a conversation, it goes into lock mode, and wont let me do the "slide to release" unlock action.
Its a brand new phone, am i overlooking a simple setting needs adjusted?

Are you sure that you've not got the keypad lock on? It's engaged (and disengaged) by briefly touching the Sleep/Wake (=On/Off) button on top of the phone.

Thanks Chris but it clicks off before I have a chance to touch the sleep/wake button.
It is the fact that it turns off and then won't let me open it again that is the real annoyance. Could it be settings somewhere? (although I have had a look and can't see anything to change)
I had a glitch on mine that wouldn't allow me to swipe the unlock when someone was calling me so I couldn't answer the call. I find with iPhones that if you don't fully shut down now and again then they seem to go onto a phaselock-timewarp-quantum feedback loop type thing that creates glitches like these. Shutting down and restarting clears most of these. Plus, iOS 4.0.1 is out to upgrade iOS 4 devices.

Thanks Skids. I like your "phaselock-timewarp-quantum feedback loop type thing" description! I have turned it off and back on again so fingers crossed!
