External hard drive changed from (L) to (F)?

I have an external hard drive on the computer that has always been called (L). Today someone put a USB onto the computer and when they were taking it off again they went to the safely remove hardware icon they clicked on (L) instead of whichever letter the USB stick was plugged into. Now when I've gone into the external drive it has changed from (L) to (F). Is there any way to change it back to (L) without losing the stuff that is on it? It's annoying as I've got shortcuts etc. set up which don't work anymore cos of the letter change I assume. Any help appreciated.

In XP you use WINDOWS DISK MANAGEMENT which displays a list of the connected drives, RIGHT-CLICK on the one you want and select the CHANGE DRIVE LETTER AND PATHS... option.

Don't have Vista or 7 to know exactly what you do with those but it must be something similar.
Problem may go away if you reboot.

Otherwise go Start/settings/control panel/admin tools/computer mgmt/disk mgmt

You can right click and change stuff, but be careful :-)
