I have just bought a new game and on trying to load it, I get the message "Setup files are corrupted, please obtain a new copy etc" I am using Vista home premium. any suggestions

In that case, I would suggest you take it back to the shop, as it sounds like the CD has possibly scratched.

I seem to have sorted the problem. on installation at one point is had create desktop shortcut and install direct x 9.set as default. when I unchecked the direct x 9 it worked.
