trying to get surround sound by watching just the tv ?????

bought and LG tv and LG surround sound system today ...got a hdi cable and another cable which they said in the shop that it was so that you can get surround sound on tv aaswell as by watching a dvd... works on dvd but cant seem to get it by just watching normal tv... any ideas as to what im doing wrong....please help
