I intend to change from a BT phoneline to Virgin. How do I go about cancelling BT so that I get a smooth change-over with no repercussions? I've asked at the Virgin shop but they just said to contact BT which I'm finding isn't all that clear.

When I signed up to Virgin they did everything for me including keeping my old number and I got a final bill from BT a couple of weeks after switchover.

That's what I thought should happen but the Virgin shop said I should initiate the closure of the BT account by contacting BT myself
If you are keeping your old number then Virgin have to approach BT for the transfer. I did my transfer to Virgin services online and never spoke to BT - I don't think the shop staff are clued up on the process.
