Unable to Select Volume Controls

I am unable to set the volume controls while on either the Playback or Recording for the following: Mono Mix, Aux, CD Player, Line In, Microphone and Phone Line. The selection can only be made for Stereo Mix and SPDIF> How can this be resolved. I need to have either the Line In or Microphone for purpose of recording  external audio input from a casette player. Please Advice.
