Not printing!

My Hp printer has suddenly stopped printing the main text of email etc. I get all the heading and side gubbins, but not the main (important) part. Someone suggested that the blk ink may have run out but then surely it wouldn't print at all? Please help, thank you xx
prev CD/DVD ROM drive 'gone' from PC - still a prob :o(
