Best free virus protection

I am looking for advice. I have had my laptop protected by McAfee Virus protection but I have had to uninstall this as it has caused my laptop to freeze. I am looking for the best free virus protection and would be gateful for any suggestions. I have installed AVG as I am paranoid about using my computer without protection but am not sure if this is the best progam to use.

avg is good so is avira and avast
or you could download comodo with firewall and virus protection all in one
just keep them update daily, some do this automatically

Thanks for that info. I had read that AVG can make a computer run slowly but don't know if that is the case.
