I've heard the term 'triangulation' used when the issue of tracking or locating mobile phones comes up.  How is this done exactly?

Basic triangulation is defined here:

with cell triangulation, the location of 3 (or more) mobile phone transmitters are known, so working out exactly where a phone simply involves signal strength measurement (the stronger a phone's signal, the closer you are to point a, for example).
