HTC Magic phone - transfering files from PC

Hiya hope someone can help me with this query. Have just got my new HTC magic phone and am trying to send files from m laptop to the phone. I connect the phone with the USB and the phone comes up that it's connected but nothing shows up on my laptop? There is no disc or anything to install with this phone so what do I need to do if say I want to send a music file? Nothing at all pops up on my screen when it's connnected - whan do I need to do. Thank-you
