Adding additional hard drive to pc

My old PC died on me recently so I bought a new one. I want to move my old hdd across. There is space for another hdd but annoyingly there is not a spare connector/lead.

I dont know the terminology but my old pc used to connect using the large socket(IDE?) but the new one uses the socket next to it(SATA?).

As I say there is only one cable of this type inside the case so is there some sort of extension lead that can connect to the one cable converting it into two?

Thanks.

You have got the names right :)

If I'm reading you right you have one IDE connector on your new main board (which is probably being used for the CD drive??)

if thats the case look in your old PC, if your lucky you will have an IDE cable with 3 connectors on it. if so you can replace the cable in your new machine with that and plug both the hard drive and the CD drive into it. you will have to change a little jumper (switch type thingy) on the back of the CD drive and the hard drive to set one as a master device and one as a slave (doesn't matter which way round)

or the other option is you get an external USB caddy to put your old drive into and use that, they are about 15-20 if you shop round a bit.

thanks for the quick response.

good idea with the old pc cable, i'll look into that.

ive also realised that i was being totally dopey as although there is only 1 sata cable in the case there are two spare sockets on the motherboard- duhhhh!!!

usb caddy ...

I don't like connecting HDDs to ide on modern boards (no reason .... just don't
