I have a number of personal VHS tapes that I want copied to DVDs. I have a rewritable DVD! Is it possible to copy the tape without using the computer but just the 3 coloured AV leads direct from the VCR to the DVD recorder. All my attempts do not work. Where is the likely problem? My discs are the correct ones.

You don't need the coloured leads. Tune your DVD Recorder to EX2,Play video, which should be on EX2 and press Record on DVD Recorder. I do it regularly without any problems.
Plug a scart lead from your VHS to your DVD recorder.

Then plug another scart lead from the DVD recorder into your TV.

The scart input on a DVD recorder is usually called AV1 or AV2 or maybe EX1 or EX2, something like that (as Everhelpful says)

Set the DVD "channel" on the DVD recorder to EX1 or EX2 and it should "see" what is coming from the VHS player via the scart.

Press "play" on the VHS and if it appears on the TV screen it is going through your DVD recorder OK.

If it does NOT appear on the TV screen change the DVD channel on the DVD recorder to another channel (like AV1, AV2 or whatever).

Once the picture appears on the TV screen you know the DVD recorder is seeing it ok, so you can then press record on the DVD recorder and it should record.

Could you explain what EX2 is. I have a Sony rewriter and has 4 options L1,L2, L3 and L4. The VCR is a separate device which is connected to the TV. The Sony is also connected to the TV by a scart selecter.
Most DVD recorders have a built in TV tuner.

When you want to record a program on the TV tuner built into your DVD recorder you set the "channel" on the DVD recorder to 1 to record BBC1, 2 to record BBC2 and so on.

So the little window on your DVD recorder will show "1" when you are recording BBC1 and so on.

Now you dont want to record from the TV tuner inside your DVD recorder, you want to record from a device plugged into a scart socket in the back of your DVD recorder.

So you need to "tell" your DVD recorder to look for a video image coming IN from one of the scart sockets.

Your DVD recorder gives "names" to these two scart sockets. On my Panasonic they are called AV1 and AV2.

Other DVD makes may call them EX1 and EX2 (EX stands for external).

So you need to press a button on your remote control so the channel on your DVD recorder changes to AV1 or EX1 (or whatever you DVD recorder calls them).

If you do that, then the video image coming INTO the DVD recorder via the scart socket will be seen by the DVD recorder.

Have a look at the documenation that came with your DVD recorder and it should explain how to set the DVD recorder to record from an external device.
Is your dvd recorder a stand alone device connected to your tv, or is it a computer dvd rewriter?
Sorry, ignore me :)

From this I gather that the VHS and DVD recorder are NOT joined together by a Scart lead.

If you want to record from VHS tapes to your DVD recorder you MUST connect the VHS player direct to the DVD recorder via a scart lead.

So the video image will flow OUT of the VHS player and INTO the DVD recorder.

As I said, if you then use a second scart lead from the DVD recorder to the TV you will then see the video image from the VHS player on the TV (it will be flowing THROUGH the DVD recorder).

Once the video image from the VHS is flowing THROUGH the DVD recorder then you can press record on the DVD recorder and it will record the image onto a DVD disc.
Here is a diagram from the Sony page showing how to connect a VHS and DVD recorder.

http://www.sonydigital-link.com/tv/tutorials/c onnectivity/connection_sd.aspx?l=en&d=o3&fd=TV 2S,VCR,DVDR.

See number 5, this is a scart lead coming from the VHS to the DVD.

See number 4, this is a scart lead coming from the DVd to the TV.

In the section TO USE near the bottom it says:

"To record from your VCR, using the input select on your DVD Recorder's remote control, select Line 3 then follow the instructions in your DVD Recorder's instruction manual on how to record"

So it looks like you use L3.
