I am trying to put all my photos from my pc onto a cd. I have done this endless times before and usually manage to put about 300 pictures onto one cd, but it won't let me do it today ! It says there is insufficient space on the cd for them. I have tried just to put a few on but it comes up with the same message even when i try a new cd. How can I compress them to get them all on one ??

No, they are new.
check size of files you want to copy against size of disc then?
I've had this message and it confused me as I knew the CD was new and empty. The message in fact related to the hard drive of the computer. Photos take up lots of memory and you can quickly fill a hard disk especially if it is a few years old and has not got a huge amount of storage space like the newer ones.
Let me expand on the above. The message I received was 'There is insufficient space on the disc'.
Of course I thought it meant the CD, but eventually I realised it meant the hard disc, which is where temporary files are written before being transferred the the CD. I cured the problem by installing a bigger hard drive.
