I want to buy a dvd player that I can also record on as well as play the dvd discs I already have. I have been advised to get one with hard drive, but just bought one and not able to play my own dvds, only watch what I've recorded? No slot for normal dvd discs. What should I look for in description when buying online, after returning one just bought!

If in doubt, buy a Sony
It sounds like you`ve bought just a hard drive recorder, you need to search for DVD hard drive recorder or maybe DVD recorder with hard drive.
Look for the full description and it will tell you what sort of DVDS it will play and record to.
I find that my DVD recorder will play DVDs as well but not all players will play all DVDs. I would suggest you take a recorded DVD to the store where you intend to buy and ask them to play it for you to make sure it is compatible.
Yours was probably described as as PVR Personal Video recorder I think.

Look at the Panasonic DVD/Hard Drive combo
