I bought a sky gnome for xmas, but can not figure out how to get it to work.

The gnome just has white noise every time I switch it on (or at least radio hiss) the gnome can control switching the sky box however (so it works as a remote at least) any ideas what I am doing wrong? many thanks for any help.. its driving me (more) nuts.
