Does anyone know of a software product that performs LP Phono equalisation using software ? So I can plug my turntable directly into the soundcard for LP backup purposes.

You could equalise the MP3s after the first recording, or doesn't your sound recording software have an eq?

The equalisation of a turntable cartridge output signal follows a precisely defined curve present in electronic phono stages. It should be able to be implemented in software, far more accurately, that's what I'm after not a general "tweaking" ofthe sound to brighten up a dull album.
If it's going straight into the sound card, are you using the line in without a preamp, or wanting to find software to use the high imp. in? Mine was preamped into the line and sounded fine, but my expertise is in PA and not HiFi.

That's exactly what the issue is, I want to miss out the phono stage in the pre-amp and do it digitally. I have an ok quality pre-map in the hi-fi which I could use, but using the assumption that the lower the number of links in the hi-fi chain the better it sounds , I was trying to remove one.
You could try asking at DiyAudio.com, they'll all obsessives there.
There is an Equalizer in Audacity (an open-source audio mixer/processor, www.audacity.sourceforge.net) that has an RIAA setting which will equalize the output of the cartridge. However, your soundcard line input is unlikely to be sensitive enough to amplify the cartridge output properly, which is only a few millivolts. You could try the microphone input...
Terratec produce a Phono PreAmp Studio package at a reasonable price consisting of a preamplifier and software aimed at the PC market which will suit all your requirements.

Sparky that's it ! Thanks, at last ! The input impedence is indeed an issue which may ultimately prove an unsurmountable problem, but this is what I was afer, Thanks.
