Microsoft word - is there a free alternative?

Actually, I'm sure there is, but for the life of me I cannot recall the name. For some reason my Microsoft Word no longer works, and I don't think I have the discs needed to re-install it.

I sem to recall there is something out there that is free, and compatible, but can't recall what - can anyone help?
