I have lost my phone (clever!) and my friend said that if I ring up o2, and ask them to block that one and send me a new one, they'll send me one which has the same number, and has all my contacts on it, because they're stored through the network or something. . .is that right or has she got her facts hideously wrong? Thanks all

you need to phone them up straight away to get them to block it.they can send you one with the same number but don't know about you getting your numbers on it.
She has her facts 50% wrong, if you are contract, or as long as you registered your pay-as-you-go sim they will send you a new sim with the same phone number, it will not have your numbers stored on it though.

Sorry you'll have to collect and input them again.

You can get sim backup devices really cheap or with most phones can backup to a computer, do this when you have all numbers on new sim to make sure you don't have same problem again, or try not to lose your phone again:-)

Sorry to be bearer of bad news
