my daughter has just had �900 wiped out of her halifax account ,she was sent an email by halifax bank ,so she thought , asking her to change her password as someone had attempted to access her account ..Foolishly she replied to the email and someone has wiped her out ...will the halifax bank reimburse her ,or has she lost it ?

she wont get reimbursed, banks are always warning us all to be wary of 'phishing' and NEVER to give details by email, as she gave her details the bank wont be liable
There is a good chance that they will reimurse her, when did it happen? Has she contacted the bank yet? They will probabaly have a 24 hour number to call.
Banks never send emails asking for confirmation of account details, I would report it to the halifax though, they may be able to advise you of your options better

Thanks for replying ,I am surprised that the bank allowed such a large amount to be withdrawn at once without questioning it .She is only young and has just been paid ,normally she withdraws �20 or �30 out ,but never that much ..
I am not sure that they will not refund weeal - they would need to prove that calderdales daughter had received one of these warnings and had acknowlledged that she had read it. failing that, there is always the FSCS.

This has just happened this evening ,she has telephoned the bank after she went to a cash machine which said she had zero in her account .
How awful calderdale! Sorry to hear about that. A few months ago, someone managed to access my details & take some money from my credit card AND debit card. I immediately contacted the bank, police - and everyone I could think of. After weeks of filling in statement forms, emailing, making phone calls, etc., the bank reimbursed me for every lost penny. Traces showed that someone in Amsterdam'd hacked into my accounts, and was then forwarding details to someone in Poland! If you persist in asking the Halifax to help, they may well be able to do something, but as weeal said, you may not. Best of luck anyway - x
Hi weeal, I am not saying that you are definitely wrong, they will give out warnings and may use that to protect themselves from claims, but at the end of the day, a fraud has been committed and Halifax will investigate in order to protect their customers and tbh �900 is a drop in the ocean to them - they will realise the potential loss of business that not paying up will amount to.

Thank you all for being so helpful ,my daughter is distraught ..I will ring her and tell her that there may be a chance that the Halifax will reimburse her ..she is a long way from home without any money ,so I hope they don't take too long to reimburse her ,if they are going to .

Also calderdale - I would say to the halifax that you intend to go to the police - they dont always bother nowadays, and if they dont, they will more than likely reimburse the money, but a crime has been commited and your daughter has every right to go to the police herself. See how she gets on with halifax in the morning and report later in the day if they dont confirm that they are going to reimburse.
Have a look here calderdale - I can't see any reason why they would not reimburse her. They do give good advise on how to avoid fraud, but I can't see anywhere that has a get out clause to their guarantee.

Oh dear sorry to hear about this, its true that warnings about banks asking you never to give details of your account on line. Banks will never ask for passwords etc and perhaps your daughter has learnt a very expensive lesson, having said that I have banked with the Halifax now for many years and find them very helpful, keep on at them, try to make it clear that it is their duty to prevent these imposters from using their logo/title/trade marks etc. They are a vast and highly responsable company and if one of their customers falls fowl of these evil imposters then it is only right that they ( the Halifax) should put right and reimburse her immediately.

Thank you all ,the halifax online guarantee appears to cover their official online site ,I wonder if it also covers an imitation site ,,You have all been very helpful and I will tell her to keep contacting the bank ...I wil come back on tomorrow and let you know the outcome ..Once again thank you all for taking the time to help someone out .
poor lass!! there should be an email address where she can forward that fake email to. and get it reported so it will not happen to anyone else. i work for another bank and one of mate received one similar, but he said he dont even have an account with the bank why r they asking for his bank details. so i gave him the email for him to report it, he also fwd it to me, but as soon as i read it, i knew it was fake!! (spelling mistakes) but the bank will never ask for your bank details NEVER! so dont fall into that trap. if u ever do get one and worried about it, call your bank they will advise u. :) x
Don't panic too much. My brother is thick when it comes to computers so his wife always checks his emails / online banking etc.

She received a phishing email in his name and responded straight away, giving all my brothers account details, passwords etc. Needless to say, 1 day later he had �10K less in his bank account...

When they advised NatWest, they froze his account and opened a new one with an overdraft to cover any immediate expenses etc before investigating. He eventually (about 3 weeks later) was fully reimbursed by the bank. This was a huge relief as it happened 1 month before they were due to get married abroad and the money was in his account to pay for it.

He didn't even dare tell our parents till afterwards!
I have had around 15 of those emails from 'The Halifax' in the last week,also 4 from Royal Bank of Scotland.I don't bank with either of these institutions. I would never fall for this sort of thing anway. I hope your daughter gets her money back.
