I have been saving documents on a 3 1/2 in floppy, but now when i try to open it I get the message that the disc needs to be formatted. If I do this I will loose all the stored information. How can I retrieve my docs?

with great difficulty..... you could try it in different machines, but when a PC stops recognising data on a floppy, that's usually the end of it.
I had the same problem, this was due to saving the Data on a PC with a newer windows version than I later tried to open them on. As before, either try an older or newer machine than you are currently using. Fingers crossed, I did retrieve my date.
Closer has a good point. It could be your floppy drive that's at fault, and not the disk. One last ditch effort might be to scandisk it.. not sure if it's available on windows 2000 or later, but it certainly was on windows 95. Managed to recover a few disks in the past with that.
Sorry, its a case of "What docs?" There not there any more. Try it in another computer, you might be lucky
good luck... next time use a flash drive or something.
