Obliged to use Livebox for internet phone?

I'm seriously considering asking my ISP (Orange) to update me to their internet phone service, but would I have to use their Livebox system in order to use the ADSL phone?

I'm actually living in France and use my own Zoom modem/router rather than the Orange provided modem, as when you install the drivers from their CD you end up having a pop-up window through which you have to 'switch-on' to access the internet. Soooo archaic!

So bottom line is, can one purchase an appropriate Livebox (it's also so big and cumbersome!) substitute which will still access the same internet + phone package that is being offered by Orange?

Thats an interesting question. I've had Orange livebox for about 7 months now, and use the phone connection provided on the Livebox. The quality is not good, and when I call someone who has caller ID, I appear as an international number, so some folk won't answer me!

I cant see how you would be able to make a physical VOIP connection for your outgoing phone line other than via the Livebox itself.

Maybe someone else will post a solution.

Access it through browser via webpage. Try RingCentral VoIP, it does not need any hardware installation and you can still use your existing number as your extension.
