Can anybody tell me if they are any good and if you have to pay for the service or just the gprs/wap charges?? Or....Is there any other instant messengers for mobile phones that anybody could recommend??

Agile is about the best you'll find. It is completely free to use, apart from your GPRS charges of course. But it's not expensive, hell of a lot cheaper than texting anyway.
