We live on the south west coast of Portugal and want to get the BBC world service and/or home radio channels on the radio. The reception from the transmitors we can pick up is poor , so we were wondering about a DAB (?) system. I would be grateful for any help or suggestions. Many thanks.

Dab is a service which is currently only available in Britain, even then not eveywhere is covered. If you look on the world service homepage and type in your nearest city (blue box halfway down the page) it will tell you which radio frequencies / satellites carry their programming.Or you could listen using your pc either with the radio player or with a usb gismo which i will find out for you later.

world service is here

This is the type of radio I'm thinking about

Maplin sell 4 different types all around 100 to 150 mark and you don't need a pc to listen to them. Although you will need a wireless internet connection.
Try this download. I was in Huelva this week just round the corner fromyou and it picked up some BBC TV and Radio (amongst other things).

Thanks for all our suggestions but we are looking to recieve on a portable radio and not use a computer link at all.
Then your choice is shortwave radio. Or you could listen through a tv using a satellite receiver and dish. The frequencies are on the World Service website, just type in your nearset city in the blue box.

Thanks pug100. We already have a short wave radio and that is where the problem lies. We are just out of range( or on the very edge of the range) for a decent reception from either Euopean or African transmitters; and have tried all the frequencies suggested on the World Service website. We have satellite TV and get them all fine through that but wanted to use the portable radio elsewhere. Many thanks for your time and suggestions.
