If a piece of software is releaesed in 2001 and the box is marked 'Windows 95, 98 or Me,' is it likely to work on XP?

NO, but if you really, really and i mean REALLY want to run the software or windows xp, post back.
And you better be a super computer wizz, because its very hard to do.

The answer is ... it should do .... the windows 95 ref is slightly concerning .... but because 98 ME are included ... the prog almost certainly will run

Install and try .... if no joy go to the program files folder
c:\program files\yourprog
and right click the .exe file - (the one named in the shortcut)

(if you have file extensions turned off - it's probably the one with the same icon as the shortcut!)
OR - from the explorer window
go to tools | folder options | view
and remove the tick for "hide extensions for known file types"

then continue
right click the file - select
Properties | compatibility
tick the "run this program in compatibility mode for ...."
and try 98 .... if not try 95
