i switch the computer on,it starts to load then it says windows/system32/is missing or corrupt.it is windows millenium but i dont have the original start up disk.my recovoury disk doesnt work either,ive tried installing windows xp but it says the same thing as soon as it restarts to do the instalation.

Well to install XP, you will need to change the BIOS settings to get the machine to boot from the CD, but it sounds like you might have a problem with your hard drive.
