The most popular combination of software, with AB users, seems to be AVG + Zone Alarm (using the free editions of both). Zone Alarm is a perfectly adequate firewall and AVG updates itself automatically every day to deal with the latest threats to your PC's security.

Like many others, I use this combination of software and I'm perfectly happy with it. Unless you're running something like the internet server of a major company (which should always have a hardware-based firewall), those two free products are perfectly adequate.

Make sure you understand the difference between an anti-virus program and a firewall.

They are NOT the same thing and you need BOTH.

A lot of companies who are famous for one thing (like a firewall) are now starting to sell other things (like an anti-virus) so the lines are blurring.

For example Norton, with products like Internet Security Suite (or whatever it is called) include an anti-virus AND a firewall, and a couple of other tools (spam filter?).

Zone Alarm, most famous for a firewall, are also starting to sell other tools including an anti-virus.

AVG, most famous for anti-virus, are starting to sell other things.

So I would go for:

The "free" Firewall from zone alarm.

The "free" anti-virus from AVG.

You may also want to consider Adaware, a free spyware package.

Winpatrol, a free tool to monitor your Windows system to make sure no one is changing anything behind your back.
ZoneAlarm and AVG for me.

Plus Ewido, Spybot, A Squared, X Cleaner, Spywareblaster and Ad-Aware. All kept up to date and run regularly.

All free. :)

Do not use AVG Free!
They will stop supporting it January - Febuary next year, so it will not do you good in the long run.
I suggest downloading Windwso Defender.
I have used AVG and Zone Alarm for aprox 5 yrs now and its served me well.
Sorry JoshPerkins but you are only half right with AVG being stopped. In Jan Version 7.1 will stop being supported but the latest version 7.5 will continue to be supported.
