MSN key port problem

A friend of mine has recently encountered this problem on his laptop with MSN. It wont log him in and is saying the reason fot this is a 'key port' problem. The error code given was 80072efd.

We've searched through google for possible resolution to no success. I believe the problem has started due to his norton internet security subscription running out, and have tried removing it in safe mode - but there are still traces of it all over the system.

Anyone any ideas as to how this can be solved?

system restore back to a point where it worked. then remove the thing.
