Is it a HP Scanjet?
Is it plugged into a USB hub? Try connecting it to another USB port, on the actual computer.

its a visioneer , no its not plugged into a hub either, but the pcs ports , ive even disabled my avirus in case that could be it - but nothing- confused
Try uninstalling any software that runs it, and perhaps removing the drivers for it (right-click My Computer, click properties, goto hardware tab, click device manager button, find your scanner, right-click it and click uninstall).

Once stuff has been removed, restart your computer and reinstall the drivers for it again. Ideally, download the latest drivers.
