Can't speak for orange, but I would assume it's the same for BT, and they say for higher speeds, you really need a router and not a modem.
Postdog: I'm not sure where you've read that, but it's rubbish. The modem (which shouldn't even be called that really for digital connections) is what is required to 'translate' the internet connection received. A router just splits it about to different places; a router that accepts an immediate internet connections is just a router with a modem stuck inside it too.

starrs: the modem should be able to handle the 8mbps perfectly well I would have thought. It's be made to be able to handle much faster connections.

What's acutally wrong with your connection? Is it just slow, or intermittent?

Run this speed test and write back the numbers you get:

just got a speedtouch (not sure if it's 330)

When I installed it, there were 2 options, configure for speeds below 4Mbps and configure for above 4Mbps. You may need to go through the installation again.
