I have an Advent laptop Pentium 4 and it has wirless capability. The only thing is I don't know how to switch it on. I click on the icon and it tells me there are no wireles networks in range. Does that mean I need to get the wireless modem first and set that up before it recognises it? What do I do next? Cheers

Yes, you will need to set up a wireless modem, to broadcast the wireless network for you to connect to.
You need a router before you connect wirelessly! Check with your ISP provider whether they will provide you with one as there are plenty around and most of them now provide you with their own router like BT.

I'm with Wanadoo/Orange and have the livebox which is pretty good.
