Seen this after your more recent note - possibly being slowed down by Norton and McAfee having some form of conflict ? I dont use Norton but from other users comments, does seem to slow down certain functions - Grisoft AVG is as good as many antivirus programmes (and it's free).
Having lots of e-books on your computer (or any other type of file) will not slow it down. A computer mainly slows down when lots of programs are running.

You say you have Norton AND McAfee. Both do anti-virus and both do firewall.

IF you are using antivirus AND firewall on both this is a BAD THING.

Is it only the download speed that is bad or the overall computer speed ?

Remember the download speed is not always that quoted.

For example if the machine you are getting it from is slow, or has a slow upload speed, it doesn ot matter what your download speed is if it cannot get the data quick enough.

Only have ONE anti-virus program running and ONE firewall running.
Use this program to test your broadband speed.

http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net/download/

This program will run and contact various sites around the world and give an estimate of your broadband speed.

This will verify if indeed you do have a 3Gb download speed.
Running two anti virus programs is fine. As long as one is on demand only, this is important so you do not get conflicts. Try clearing all the rubbish from your comp, then run a defrag. Try CCleaner it is freeware.
