I am cheap and have Norton 2005. The latest updates however seem to completely monopolize my system slowing every process to a crawl, countless incidents of norton is waiting for a virus scan of this , that, or whatever renders my computer almost useless. seriously fed up. I've downloaded avg from grisoft but not installed it yet.Is this a better way to go?

Hello jennifer_cro, I'm not running a scan. I open my browser and up pops the message, norton is waiting for a virus scan of whatever, close my browser the same thing happens again.open a web page and norton kicks in with the same message, open any on-line file and norton interrupts and slows everything to a point were I just pull the fcuknig plug.

The little red light on my tower is constantly on and my HD is constantly rattling , my cursor is an egg timer. All is fine untill I go online and then all the above happens.
yes install AVG and throw Norton away
Would definitely agree with Camioneur, AVG is really good and does all you need without hogging your system.
Uninstall everything norton-related.

Get AVG Anti-virus (free)
and Kerio Personal firewall (free)
and Ad-aware Personal (free)

It makes you very cheap, but it also makes you more protected online than with Norton, and your system runs much faster.
Yes definitely get rid of norton, my norton anti virus prog got a virus and my pc seized up completely! I have had heard avg from grisoft is good, I use pc-cillin and it does its job without taking over my pc! good luck

fo3nix, I use zone alarm free firewall and found it to be excellent, if you can convince me kerio is a better option I'll certainly give it a try. I also use spyware blaster which sort of negates the need for ad-aware, as it never finds anything ! (to date)
All the spyware things do pretty much the same thing. I've just always used Adaware and never had any problems, so recommend it. I'm sure others are just as good though.

As for Zonealarm. Well yes it is good, I used to use it all the time. But it's very slow (I found) when starting up when you first start windows. Kerio is much faster and works just as well. It also uses less memory when it's running, and can allow for more advanced setups (at least, it's easier to find the advanced bits I think).
