I agree with spacechimp - text and numeric. I cant think of a third type unless you can count a formula.

alphabetic, alphanumeric and numeric is what I meant to say.

Keep it simple? Text, numbers, formulae? (text being alphanumeric).

Dates, Text and Numeric. I would also say currency, but this probably falls under numeric in this general context.
