I used the maintainance wizard on my computer (1st time for ages) it went through the first 2 programmes but on the disc fragmentation (C drive) it has been running for about 7 hours and all I'm getting is a little blue mark every so often saying 1% complete and it doesn't go any further (although when I just closed it it said it hadn't finished) can anyone help please.

Hi astondog, sometimes something running in the backgroung such as an antivirus or firewall does this. try disabling them or anything else that may be running, check your taskbar to see what's active. don't forget to put them back on when you're finished though!
Having said that, if you have not defragmented in a long long time, It can be known for it to take ages, some people suggest leaving it overnight...give it a go.

At least you will know.

After that do it every month or three
Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and, one by one, close all running programs except Explorer and Systray. (If you're using XP you'll need to go into Task Manager to do this). Then try defragmenting drive C. (Right-click on the icon & select 'Tools').

If you still encounter the problem, it means that there's something running in the background which doesn't want to make its presence known. Do a full antivirus scan and also run any other security programs you may have (i.e. adware and spyware detection programs).

defragging my master hdd takes about 11 hours nowadays. i suggest rebooting first and stopping all unnessecary running programs before you start defragging. also, try not to use the computer while defragging.
Defragging can best be done in 'Safe Mode'. This stops a lot of programs running in the background. You need to hold down the f8 function key while your machine is starting up. As others have said, though, it could take overnight if you haven't defragged for a while.
